IDR Pay Planning conference round up 2020

IDR hosted its first online conference on the 17th of September 2020. The Pay Planning for 2021 conference was well attended and we received very positive feedback from delegates.

Opening the conference Louisa Withers, Commercial Director at IDR, provided insights as to how some employers are improving sick pay provisions in response to coronavirus and the Government’s changes to Statutory Sick Pay. Louisa also outlined how pay is moving faster for roles in the new degree-apprentice trainee category, while pay growth for traditional graduates has slowed significantly. Finally, Louisa provided insights as to how firms are managing in-role pay progression.

Next up, Zoe Woolacott, Researcher at IDR, outlined how the picture on pay awards has changed since the start of the year, with the median dipping slightly in the latest period. We have seen a wider variety of outcomes than last year with a rise in pay freezes on the one hand while higher-end pay awards, many of which are for the lower-paid, continue to be made by many employers.

Ken Mulkearn, Research Director at IDR, looked at prospects for next year, examining in particular the findings from our recent survey of employers’ reward plans for 2021. Ken detailed these intentions, and also presented about the economic/labour market outlook and inflation forecasts for 2021, including potential downward and upward pressures on pay and conditions and what the key issues for 2021 may be.

Questions from delegates were plentiful and led to a lively discussion at the end of each presentation.

After a short break, the second half of the conference was opened by employment law expert Darren Newman, who presented some of the key pay-related employment law challenges with examples from current cases covering issues such as equal pay and employee rights.

The conference closed with Duncan Brown, Principal Associate at the Institute for Employment Studies, who raised important questions about reward after the pandemic, looking particularly at the future outlook for jobs and pay.

Thank you to everyone who joined our conference. We hope it will help you to make informed decisions on reward in what is likely to continue to be a very challenging period.
