Clustering of awards at lower levels brings median down

The median pay award across the economy has fallen to 2.2% in the three months to the end of September 2020, according to IDR’s latest monitoring of pay settlements. This change marks the latest stage of a small but important decline in the median, from 2.5% throughout the first half of 2020 to 2.3% during the summer months. Significantly, the private sector median dropped by a greater margin – from 2.2% in the three months to August to 2.0% in this latest analysis period. Changes in the overall distribution of pay awards, with a greater incidence of lower awards in particular, have influenced the falling median.
