Special article: Inflation likely to dip in spring before rising again later

The Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of the cost of living is set to rise a little in the early part of 2020, but could fall sharply in April, to around 2%, before rising again in the autumn, according to the latest set of forecasts from our panel of City economists. Their assessment of the expected path of the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) is similar, though as usual it is likely to be between 0.7 and 0.9 percentage points behind the RPI.
