Lag in employment figures masks extent of virus impact on labour market

The latest headline employment figures, covering the quarter from February to April, appear initially unremarkable: the headline employment rate, taken as the proportion of 16 to 64-year-olds in employment, fell by just 0.1 percentage point over this timeframe, while employment levels for all individuals aged 16 and over increased by 6,000, to just under 33 million, despite these figures covering a full month of lockdown.
