We range far and wide in this issue of Pay Climate. As well as a snapshot of the state of play on hybrid working, we look at pay-setting in the lower-paying sectors of the economy and we also consider the latest trade union membership statistics. Our regular analysis of trends in pay awards indicates that these are holding up, even if the recent trend has been downwards. The outlook for inflation might help maintain this, even if the labour market softened somewhat in the latest figures. However, it may not have softened enough, since in some other rare good news, redundancies were actually down. The fact that employment retains a certain amount of resilience, allied with persistent inflationary pressures, means that market demands on pay remain just about on the upside, perhaps.
