Employers in low-paying sectors set minimum pay rates 48p higher than statutory floor

Our recent poll of minimum pay rates, targeted predominantly at sectors with significant numbers of low-paid staff such as hospitality, retail, childcare, leisure and housing and social care, as well as some parts of manufacturing, financial services and local government, has found that the median minimum pay rate for adult workers across these sectors is £10.90 an hour, some 48p or 4.6% above the statutory minimum. The proportion of staff on the minimum rate at each organisation varies widely, from 0.1% to 100% (at two small museums in the sample), but is typically 19.6%.
