All three inflation measures have continued to rise this month, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers’ housing costs (CPIH) stood at 3.3% for the year to August 2026, up from 3.1% the previous month. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) also rose from 2.9% in July to 3.1% in August. The Retail Prices Index (RPI) increased to 3.4%, from 3.2% the previous month. The increase in transport prices, especially motor fuels, has been the largest contributor to the overall increase in inflation. While there was some downward pressure from the price of confectionery and chocolate, this was seemingly not enough to offset the sharp increase in fuel prices.
