Labour market shows signs of re-tightening as number of people in work hits record high

The Office for National Statistics confirmed that the number of people in employment increased to a record high between February and April 2023, with a further rise in the number of people on payrolls to 30 million. At the same time though, unemployment has risen slightly due to an increase among those unemployed for up to a year. The rise in both employment and unemployment this month is due to a moderate decline in economic inactivity. This is due to many individuals who had previously been economically inactive now looking to re-enter the workforce and either finding work or appearing on the unemployment register as they look for work.
