Labour market stays broadly steady though signs of cooler climate continue

Economic inactivity and unemployment in the latest quarter (July to September 2023) were broadly the same as the previous quarter, while employment looks to have fallen marginally, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). As we noted last month, the headline figures for the three indicators mentioned are adjusted experimental series that the body is producing at the same time as it makes improvements to the survey on which the estimates are normally based. According to the alternative figures, the employment rate stands at 75.7%, down 0.1 percentage points, while unemployment remained at 4.2% and economic inactivity at 20.9%.
